The bacteria in our digestive tract greatly affects how the rest of our bodies and even our brains work. The gut microbiome in the early years of life is linked to common childhood ailments such as colic, constipation, eczema, sleep disturbances and the development of chronic ailments later in life such as allergies, asthma, autism and obesity.

Alba Health is developing a gut microbiome test specifically for children, from newborns to 4-year-olds. The test is based on the understanding that we develop the foundations of our future health in the first years of life.
During this period we develop our immune system, our metabolism and our brain. The gut microbiome plays a very important role in this development.
The DNA of all gut microbes is collected from a stool sample and then used to deduce which bacteria are present and what they do.
One microbiome test reveals, among other things, the "friendly" bacteria that promote healthy development and also the proportion of "unfriendly" bacteria that are known to inhibit the "friendly" bacteria and can cause infections when present in large numbers. It also provides insight into the development of the gut microbiome; the rate at which the microbiome develops is important for growth.
Most importantly, participants receive a series of personalized recommendations regarding nutrition, care products, environmental exposure and supplements (if needed) that have been reviewed by medical experts and are discussed with parents in a one-on-one consultation with a registered dietitian.
